From Object to Argument: A Research Workbook

A reusable method for investigating gardens, dress and materials: source records, competing explanations and three worked research plans.

A compelling cultural essay begins when a question becomes specific enough to test. This workbook moves from an attractive object to an argument with boundaries. Use it for a museum visit, an editorial commission or a personal research project. It supplies a reusable sequence and worked plans, rather than promising access to collections or expert authentication.

The three accompanying free essays introduce a plant transport case, a detachable pocket and a carved lacquer box. Here they become research problems. The aim is to distinguish what is recorded, what can be observed in a reproduction and what is being inferred. Keeping these apart makes an argument easier to check and easier to revise.

Begin with one object or documented design system. Do not begin with an entire civilisation or a statement such as fashion expresses power. Write a provisional question with a visible consequence: how does a detachable pocket change the route by which its contents are accessed? The public articles remain free; the working method and exercises continue below.
